Francis Ladines did Genetic Engineering at The Tech!

My experiment was incubated overnight and photographed the next day. It worked!

In the new Genetics: Technology with a Twist exhibit at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA, you can insert a jellyfish gene into bacteria. As the bacteria grow, they make green jellyfish protein.

Scientists use this same process to make medicine, but they don't use jellyfish genes. They insert human genes into bacteria. The genes contain the recipes to make human proteins, such as insulin or growth hormone. As the bacteria grow, they make lots of the protein, which can be harvested as medicine for people.

Jellyfish genes make these bacteria glow
The Crystal Jelly (Aequorea Victoria) glows because it has a gene that makes a green fluorescent protein (GFP).
